For Immediate Release
Board of Selectmen vote to extend property tax deadline to June 1, 2020 and suspend all interest and penalties on bills due after 3/10/2020 and paid before June 30, 2020
Tyngsborough, Massachusetts– At a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Selectmen on Monday, April 6, 2020, the Board voted 4-0-0 to execute their authority under Chapter 53 of the Acts of 2020 to extend the due date for property tax bills from May 1, 2020 to June 1, 2020. They also voted to waive all penalties and interest due on bills that were due after March 10, 2020 and that are paid before June 30, 2020. This waiver applies to property tax bills, personal property bills, and excise tax bills. The waiver at this time does not apply to sewer bills which are under the authority of the Sewer Commission. The Sewer Commission is expected to vote to waive penalties and interest on sewer bills at their meeting on April 23.
Chapter 53 of the Acts of 2020 was signed into law at the end of last week. It grants the Chief Executive Officer of a municipality, in this case the Board of Selectmen, the authority to take certain actions as outlined above to alleviate financial concerns of residents during these unprecedented times. The Board of Selectmen took full advantage of that law last night and will continue to work within its legal authority to address the many issues that this pandemic has brought upon our community.
