Members Needed: Commission on Disability

At the Special Town Meeting on November 13, the Town of Tyngsborough adopted MGL Chapter 40 Section 8J which establishes a Commission on Disability. This Commission shall be charged with researching local problems of people with disabilities, advising and assisting municipal officials and employees in ensuring compliance with state and federal laws that affect people with disabilities, and coordinating or carrying out programs designed to meet the problems of people with disabilities in coordination with programs of the Massachusetts Office on Disability.

The Commission on Disability (COD) will be comprised of 5 members, three of whom must be residents of Tyngsborough who are people with disabilities, one Tyngsborough resident who has an immediate family member who is a person with a disability, and one other appointed or elected official.

The COD will meet quarterly or as needed and will be able to spend monies collected through handicap parking violations on programs and services for people with disabilities. Upon the establishment of membership, the COD will be entitled to a training program hosted by the Massachusetts Office on Disability that is designed to orient members about the work and mission of local CODs.
