COMMAND TRAINING CENTER

State of the art Training Center opened

Tyngsboro's CTC is based on the Phoenix AZ Fire Department's Command Training Center, where for the past several years Tyngsboro Fire Officers have been traveling to train.

The CTC uses several tools to provide lifelike simulations of emergency incidents for the firefighters and the officers that participate.  In the picture to the right you see the "heart" of the CTC.  The person on the far right is the simulation controller.  He runs the simulation and modifies the parameters of the incident based on the inputs given by the firefighters and officers participating.  The person to the simulation controller's left is acting the part of the dispatcher for this scenerio.

The primary goal of the CTC is to provide the initial command officer with tools that will ensure safer operations. In addition the CTC seeks to challenge users in a controlled environment from dispatch to knockdown.

The CTC Architecture

The CTC is comprised of three main functional areas: the Digital Combustion Simulator, the class room, and the three-dimensional model area.

Digital Combustion Simulator

The first and possibly most important area is the Digital Combustion Simulator.  The Simulator is run by the Digital Combustion Software.  The software allows a user to take pictures of buildings (inside and out) and add smoke, fire and sounds to the pictures that are then presented to the pupils on their own screen view of the scenario. (5 different views can be displayed on separate displays at the same time.

All of these visual and audio queues are compiled ahead of time and they are at the simulation
controller's disposal.  So as the simulation progresses the controller is able present the different groups "working" on the incident with images and sounds based on the decisions they make in real time.

The Digital Combustion Simulator is laid out in the following manner:

Firefighting teams sit in individual cubes separated from each other and from the Incidend Comander.  All  Communications are done through radio.
The Incident Commanders sit in a location separated from the rest of the firefighters, and the only contact the firefighting teams have with command is radio communications.

Class Room

The class room is a multi-purpose area where both pre and post simulation discussions will be held.

Three Dimensional Model

A Three Dimensional Model of the "TJ Maxx Plaza" has been constructed.  This model helps students visualize one of the busiest commercial areas in Tyngsboro.  Scenarios involving the TJ Maxx Plaza will utilize this tool to simulate where apparatus will be positioned and where such important entities such as Staging and Command will be set up.
